Here are some examples of my working methodology for digital projects. Most of the time I can photograph subjects such as planes, trains, cars etc. and composite artwork using a combination of other images I have already taken. Occasionally, I will digitally illustrate artwork from scratch, and sometimes it is necessary to construct small sets using models or toys, which can be reproduced either a clock designs, limited edition prints, poster art, coasters, t-shirts or series of greeting cards etc.
Below are examples of a couple of projects. If you can't find it to photograph then build it!
Let's face it no matter how hard you search you will never find a T-Rex in your local park!
Dinosaur clock called the 'Enf of Time.' Combination of a studio shoot and several photographs to make this post-prodction design for a new dinosaur clock. Clockface added at a later date.
A combination of several images, taken including rubble from a building site, a cityscape, a military air display and a small toy soldier (figure aprroximately 6 inches). Image constructed using Adobe Photoshop.
Another studio build to create a dinosaur clock based on the book and film 'Mysterious Island'.
Composite artwork. One model shot three times at different angles. Consideration was taken on the direction of light when setting up. These images were then used to build the Fallen City Composite.
Sometimes if I can't find a real or full size version of what I need to create, I make my own. Buying a toy version and then modifying it either by re-painting it, adding texture and rust effects. Then I build my small set to accomapny the model. Not everything I do is recreated digitally. Sometimes I rely on being an artist!
Shooting for another design for compositing artwork of an old abandoned military jeep. The jeep was green when I purchased it. For this composite I aged it with paint to look rusty and worn.
The finalised aftwork after post-production. Clockface artwork was the added at a later stage.
This is the modified image after the studio shoot. Not a lot was required in post-production. The sky was added and a couple of modifications on the jeep. Can you spot what I added?
Time-lapse of initial studio set build to post-production finishing.
